Many thanks to Dr Amit Pabari of Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic, who are based in the West Midlands, for his contribution to this piece. Firstly, what is invisalign ?
Invisalign is an orthodontic brace used to straighten teeth. The beauty of invisalign is that it is practically invisible. It straightens teeth by using a series of custom made removable aligners that are built to order for your teeth specifically. Each of these aligners is replaced every couple of weeks, and the teeth move into place gradually over a period of time. Treatment can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months on average however some people may experience a longer timescale.
The treatment is almost entirely painless although some patients do encounter a little sensitivity of the gums for a day or two after beginning the treatment.
What are the benefits of invisalign?
The first obvious benefit is that invisalign clear braces look much better than traditional orthodontic metal wire braces. Old-fashioned metal braces get food court in them, they are more difficult to clean, they are unsightly whereas invisalign braces are virtually invisible.
Invisalign braces are much more comfortable to wear and they are completely removable so you can eat and drink at mealtimes, brush your teeth, replace your braces, and go about your business. Traditional braces are fixed in place and can only be removed professionally.
Invisalign is much safer than traditional metal or wire braces. These traditional braces have protruding pieces of metal which can damage gum tissue and also the surface of the teeth. They can also weaken teeth because of the force they exact on each tooth. No such problems exist with clear braces such as invisalign.
Invisalign aligners straighten teeth faster than traditional methods. Some people have to wear traditional metal braces for up to 5 years before they see results. On average invisalign will take around a year to 18 months to transform the look of your smile.
Invisalign will not be the correct choice for everyone however. If your teeth are severely rotated or misaligned, traditional braces may be the only option at least for the first year. Invisalign only really works for mild to moderate cases of tooth misalignment. This is also the case where your teeth may have large spaces are gaps between them or where you have a large overbite.
In all cases, your dentist will be able to decide at the first consultation whether or not invisalign is the best course of treatment for you at that stage.
Invisalign has transformed the lives of over 3 million patients so far, so the treatment is tried and tested and there’s no doubt that in almost all cases there is a successful outcome.
The only perceived downside is cost. As with all state of the art treatments, you get what you pay for and invisalign does not come cheap. You can expect to pay anywhere between £2500 and £4500 depending on the complexity of the case.
